Which AI timekeeping and billing tools are sold to small law firms?
Four stand-alone tools and four practice management suites sell AI timekeeping or billing features to small law firms. The Billing, Timekeeping & Trust Accounting with AI category holds Lawgbook ($29.99/seat/mo), LeanLaw ($55/user/mo), Ajax (quoted) and LegalTime AI (quoted), each of which drafts time entries or answers billing questions and hands the result to the firm's existing billing system. The suites that also list billing — Clio Manage, MyCase, CosmoLex and Smokeball — ship their own named AI billing features, covered below. Prices were read on the vendor's own site on October 31, 2026.
Stand-alone timekeeping tools
- Lawgbook: Essentials $29.99/seat/mo; Professional $59.99/seat/mo (coming soon). Records the workday from Gmail, Outlook, calendar and Zoom, Teams or Google Meet meetings, drafts time entries matched to the right matter with OCG-compliant narratives, and files emails to the matter in Clio.
- LeanLaw: Core $55/user/mo; Pro $75/user/mo; QuickBooks Online required and priced separately. Legal billing, e-payments and trust accounting with ClerkAI, a read-only assistant that answers questions about time entries, WIP, invoices and collections, plus a Billables AI integration that drafts time entries; 7-day free trial.
- Ajax: quoted, per seat on annual contracts. Reads on-screen work with email, calendar and phone activity, groups it across days, attributes it to the matter and writes client-ready narratives in the attorney's voice for review before release to Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, Filevine and others. Posts a no-training statement and names SOC 2 Type II.
- LegalTime AI: quoted, per attorney, with a 30-day trial. Capture runs locally on the attorney's machine, Create drafts the narrative, matter, billing code and duration, and Connect releases each approved entry to Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, Filevine or TimeSolv through the firm's own login.
Billing AI inside the suites
- Clio Manage: $49/user/mo (EasyStart). Manage AI, the evolution of Clio Duo, generates bills from client-specific activities and drafts client updates; the add-on is quoted. Posts a no-training statement and names SOC 2 Type II.
- MyCase: $50/user/mo billed annually (Basic). 8am IQ includes AI-assisted time-entry suggestions (Smart time finder), and the MyCase Accounting add-on is $39/user/mo on Pro and Advanced. Posts a no-training statement and names SOC 2 Type 2.
- CosmoLex: $49/user/mo (Launch); Core $99/user/mo; Pro $129/user/mo. Billing and trust (IOLTA) accounting are built in; shipped AI covers document summaries, plain-English filtering across billing and matters, and an intake form builder, with AI-driven bank reconciliation announced for early 2027. Posts a no-training statement and names SOC 2 Type II.
- Smokeball: quoted. AutoTime tracks activity automatically and writes the AI-generated time-entry descriptions, with billing built into the suite. Posts a no-training statement and names ISO 27001:2022.
How to read this
The stand-alone tools do not replace the billing system; each one drafts the entry and hands it to Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther or QuickBooks Online for the attorney to approve. Lawgbook and LeanLaw post flat per-seat prices; Ajax and LegalTime AI quote per seat or per attorney. Inside the suites, the billing AI is part of the per-user price at MyCase and CosmoLex, a quoted add-on at Clio, and included in Smokeball's quoted plans. LEAP also names AutoTime on its AI page; it is quoted and listed under practice management.
